The Short Range Certificate, SRC (restricted radio operator's certificate) is an internationally valid radio operator's certificate and entitles you to participate in the mobile maritime radio service on VHF and on pleasure craft and ships that are not subject to the radio equipment requirement. The SRC is valid for maritime radio stations on VHF and safety radio systems (GMDSS).If a radio is installed on a ship, it must be switched on when setting sail. The skipper must be authorized to operate the device, as proven by the Short Range Certificate. Especially if you get into distress at sea, you should know how to help yourself. Knowledge of how to operate a radio and how to call for help can be vital for survival.EXAMINATIONThe exam is administered by the Rhine-Ruhr Examination Committee of the DSV. The exam consists of three theoretical parts and one practical part. In the theoretical and practical parts, basic knowledge of the English language and a command of English technical terms that are common in practical radio communication are required.
