General information

INFORMATION ON THE VALIDITY OF BOAT LICENSES

The inland and sea boating license is an official pleasure boating license. It is valid internationally and allows you to drive your watercraft within the 3-mile zone on the sea (salt water) or inland waterways (fresh water). The inland and sea boating license also allows you to drive motorized vehicles/sailing yachts and jet skis with a propulsion power of more than 15 HP. There is no limit to the length of the boat at sea/on the ocean. On inland waterways, such as the Moselle near Koblenz, the boating license is valid for vehicles up to 19.99 m long.

REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING A RECREATIONAL BOAT LICENSE INLAND AND SEA

From 15 years and 9 months, it is possible to take the SBF inland and sea exam. The inland and sea boating license is issued by the examination board at the age of 16

COURSE STRUCTURE

SBF Inland and Sea

Theory weekend course

Compact course for inland and sea sports boating license, theory course on a weekend in 56333 Winningen / Mosel

Saturdays from 09:00 - approx. 16:00 hrs --> SBF - Inland Day (theory only, no practical motorboat training for course participants) Sundays from 09:00 - approx. 17:00 hrs --> SBF - Sea Day (theory only, no driving lessons for course participants)

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Arrange boating lessons at the same time or in good time (at least 3 weeks in advance, if possible) by telephone at the boating school. If required, you can repeat the SBF theory course - at no extra cost - at the Rhine-Moselle boating school on one of the next weekend courses. A request by email is sufficient. It is best to start answering the official exam questionnaires at home immediately after the SBF course. This is the best way to remember what you have learned and to prepare for your exam straight away.

EXAMS:

The theoretical and practical exams can - but do not have to - be taken on the same day. If you feel ready for the sports boating license exam, choose an exam date that suits you. Then register for the exam (at least 7 days in advance). You pay the exam fees directly to the committee. You can find all the information on our Exams page.

ISSUE OF DRIVING LICENSE:

After passing the SBF inland and sea exam at the DSV, the boating license is issued and sent by the Federal Printing Office. If you are in a hurry, the DSV can also issue you with a provisional sports boating license. If you would like this, please apply for and pay for it when registering for the exam.

TIP: Supplement your boating license with the SRC (Short Range Certificate) radio license. This combination is a good step towards being safe in water sports and on the world's oceans.
